Video of the Week: Stirling Moss - Octane-genarian

Somehow I never saw this fun video til now. Moss is definitely the fastest 80 year old around! I love watching him at work at the 2009 Goodwood Revival in a Lotus Cortina.

I think he is now retired. He did like to crash priceless cars!! I was at Laguna Seca the weekend he totalled the 1959 Lemans winning DBR1Aston Martin.

He retired from competitive racing not long ago. Not bad for an 83 year old.

But I must disagree with the comment on crashing priceless cars. He's had a few shunts, but there are many competitors in these historic events far more notorious for totalling beauties. See Carlos Monteverde, for instance.

If you ask me, as long as they are being driven I'm happy...

There are two sides to that story. If you keep driving them the parts all wear out and they get crashed. You can rebuild them but then it is like a replica with fake parts. Rare and important race cars should not be driven hard as we will loose them. The same goes for vintage aircraft. Pretty soon we won't have any real ones left since they keep crashing. We lost a B17 last month in the Chicago suburbs when it had an engine fire and landed in a field only to burn to the ground. The bomber lasted many bombing missions over Germany during WWII and is now gone.

I agree with Tommy, comment number 3. These great cars should be shown and driven, even driven at speed where the venue is appropriate, but never in competition. The risk of a total wreck is too great. The occasional replacement part or fixable fender-bender is part of the make-up of any car that has been raced. The "historic" car that no longer retains a claim to being real is the problem. There are plenty of beautiful replicas, such as the Lancia-Ferrari D-50s that appear occasionally, to play with.

Why "hilarious"? Goddess Honors Most Famous Living Englishman with Chaste Kiss. Most Famous Living Englishman Looks Surprised but Pleased. It appears quite charming to me.

His slightly bewildered, yet happy expression is very funny, in my opinion. And her completely out-of-context outfit in the setting of a pitlane is also pretty comical. It almost looks like she has been photoshopped in!
