McLaren F1 Design Study by Marino Binni

Given the recent spy shots of the next generation McLaren F1 floating around the internets, there is much speculation about what the car might look like. Designer and longtime McLaren fan Marino Binni offers his own concept of what he'd like the car to look like. "I didn't want to to copy the look of the F1 but rather be inspired by the compactness and 'feel' of the original," he says. You can click the image below to enlarge it.I find the wheels particularly fascinating, and I like the clean side crease, accented by a very neat and interesting side exhaust treatment. The overall proportions are close to the original car, but the most direct reference is in the shape of the door cut lines. Otherwise the car feels very Italianate to me, and very nicely done! Bravo Marino!

Nice work. Some of it reminds me a little of the Bertone 1970's and 80's prototypes including the Stratos and Runabout since it's so flat, wide and tight. Nice exhaust or atleast thats what I think those triagles are. The wheels really look Italian, something Campagnolo could have designed.

wheels remind me of the compomotive TH2s that are often found on delta evoluziones:

Hi guys,
Thanks to Bradley for posting my sketch and thanks to everyone who posted comments on it. I love getting feedback on designs I do, positive or negative.
The wheels seem to be getting a lot of attention. I originally had a more conventional wheel design on it but decided to do something radical. If you click on the image to enlarge it, you can see that those 'rings' are all connected to the hub by wires. Wire wheels on a McLaren? Why not?

Marino.

I love the design, Marino-----beautifully done, and the wheels are exquisite. Shame that McLaren as a company have the design sensibilities of a rock....the MP4 12c is completely unimaginative and I personally found the McLaren F1 to be dull as well. MARINO-----McLaren need YOU as their lead designer, man!

Thanks Syed. I'd love to have the job. It would be a dream for me. If you ever bump into Ron Dennis on the street, give him my name and tell him I'm willing to be paid half of what Frank Stephenson makes!
