I see ads (not necessarily Ralph Lauren's) do that from time to time. In spite of the use of the car as a prop, I suspect the Ralph Lauren people ultimately want to draw attention to the clothes, not the car. Removing non-essential branding or badging helps to achieve that goal.
That's my guess, anyway.
