2002 Memories
Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 10:11PM
During some house-cleaning today, I turned up this old photo of my beloved blue 1973 BMW 2002, which was my first car. It was a real peach, with round tail lights, a single weber carb, very little rust, and a beautiful wooden Nardi wheel. Thought I'd put it up here to share. I have many fond memories of this car, which I learned to drive stick on. Despite the car's diminuitive size, it still had the highest steering effort I have ever experienced when parallel parking! I wonder who has the car now and why I didn't take more photos of it when I had it...
Any other '02 owners out there who want to share their stories?

My uncle had a '74 Chamonix White on blue leather 2002tii after he sold his E39 M5. It was the first non-power steering or brakes - I only spent a few minutes behind the wheel but it's definitive BMW and a bear to try and handle at low speeds. Once on the open road it was great to toss around, though! I was about a foot too tall for the seating arrangement!
I agree, Murph. Once the car got moving, the steering was delightfully light and direct. Sure was tail-happy in the rain, though.
While I don't have any 2002 memories, I can at least remember many of my 2002 dreams, and it was definitely my dream car for a long time when I was first getting past my early flirtations with red 1970 454 Chevelles and bodykitted Skylines (I have moved on to much more normal obsessions, like Citroens and Starions). I didn't really know what driving one would be like, but I knew it would be something engaging and thrilling. Probably nervous and very light feeling like an old road bike. Don't know if my dreams of what owning a 2002 would be like match up with the reality of owning a little old BMW, but I don't need an actual 2002 to savor those dreams.
