Lancia Stratos Prototipo by Stile Bertone: Where is the future we were promised??
Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 7:45PM
I don't think car design ever really surpassed the extremes to which the styling houses of Italy went in the early 70s with their space-age wedge designs. And perhaps the most extreme example of that archetype was the Lancia Stratos Zero by Marcello Gandini, which actually did lead to the renowned Stratos production car. This clip is really cool because I had never seen any footage of this earth-bound spacecraft in motion before-- and the synth music just makes it even better! Those of you know me personally know that this video is so right up my alley!

Great concept! However, it's hard to turn down the Stratos that they did build!
Yeah they are both total classics. I'd take either in a heartbeat, though obviously the production car is actually "usable"
I love the way this thing opens up and the moveable steering column. Cool idea!
Off topic - what do you guys think of the Stratos being redone? For it or against it?
I'm for it, but I find the new version copies the original a little too slavishly. It's definitely a cool car though!
It looks like they will make a GT2 racing version of the new Stratos based on a Ferrari 430 Scud chassis.

I'd love to a Stratos GT2-spec car in the ALMS - though probably farfetched with the 458 Challenge now available and likely a customer GT2 program being announced soon.
I wouldn't be surprised if there ended up being a Stratos-spec series or something like that as it's running on older platform.
Music is from Jean-Michel Jarre.
(I suppose...)
Yes it is! I just found that out!
I worked on the new stratos, I was the lead the designer at Pininfarina on special projects at kick off, then got "kicked off" because i wasn't italian enough (funny, being english) and I didn't want to make a copy of the original...the owner had zero vision but had all the moeny so Pinin just blindly followed the cash. Such a shame...
Oh, and the moon-scape setting in the above video is a quarry right next door to the Bertone Design complex...handy for showcar shoots!
One more thing...give a guy called Andy Saunders a call...he'll probably build you one...
